Fanny Crosby: A Life of Song

Fanny Crosby’s story is one of remarkable resilience and unwavering faith. Though blind from a young age, she became one of the most prolific and beloved hymn writers of all time, leaving a legacy of song that continues to inspire generations.

Born in 1820, Fanny lost her sight at just six weeks old due to an eye infection and questionable medical treatment. Raised by her mother and grandmother after her father’s death when she was an infant, Fanny grew up in a devout Christian home. Despite the challenges of blindness, she thrived, memorizing scripture and developing a deep love for God.

Fanny’s education was groundbreaking for a blind person in the 19th century. She attended the New York Institution for the Blind, where she excelled and later became a teacher. Her talent and eloquence even led her to address the United States Congress, a remarkable feat for a woman of her time.

At the age of 44, Fanny began her hymn-writing career, a calling that would define her life. It’s estimated she penned between 5,000 and 9,000 hymns, a testament to her extraordinary gift and dedication.

Fanny’s positive spirit shone brightly throughout her life. Her famous quotes reveal a heart full of gratitude and faith:

  • « Oh what a happy soul I am, although I cannot see, I am resolved that in this world contented I shall be. »
  • « If I had a choice, I would still choose to remain blind…for when I die, the first face I will ever see will be the face of my blessed Saviour. »
  • « Chords that were broken will vibrate once more. »
  • « It seemed intended by the blessed providence of God that I should be blind all my life, and I thank him for the dispensation. If perfect earthly sight were offered me tomorrow I would not accept it. I might not have sung hymns to the praise of God if I had been distracted by the beautiful and interesting things about me. »
  • « When I get to heaven, the first face that shall ever gladden my sight will be that of my Saviour. »

Her hymns, sung in churches around the world, are a testament to her enduring faith and musical gift. Some of her most well-known include:

  • « Blessed Assurance »
  • « To God Be the Glory »
  • « Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior »
  • « Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross »
  • « Safe in the Arms of Jesus »
  • « All the Way My Savior Leads Me »
  • « Close to Thee »

  • « I Am Thine, O Lord (Draw Me Nearer) »
  • « Jesus Is Tenderly Calling You Home »
